Betting on standard NHL odds takes three periods for your action to play out, and in that time those 60 minutes will either make or break your wager. For those looking to keep sportsbook news neat and tidy in the opening 20 minutes of action, NHL first period odds are for you.
We look at which teams are hitting the ice with energy and going Over their first-period Over/Under totals in recent games.
Vegas Golden Knights
Vegas isn’t waiting long to light up the scoreboard in their recent games, going Over the first period total in eight of its last 10 contests. The Golden Knights have scored 11 first-period goals in this span while allowing 10 goals against in the opening period, for an average of 2.1 goals per first period.
Half of those contests came inside T-Mobile Arena, where Vegas has been especially active in the first period all season. The Golden Knights are 23-9 Over/Under in first periods at home on the year, cashing in at an incredible 72% rate. Those first-period Overs could continue with Vegas playing five of its next six games in Sin City.
The Flyers’ first periods have been filled with action in February with the club topping the first-period total in eight of their 10 games this month. Philadelphia, which has leaned toward the Under the full game totals this season at 33-27-1 O/U, has watched at least two goals hit the scoreboard in the first period in each of its last seven games and there has been an average of two goals per first period in that 10-game span.
The Flyers have posted a 7-3 Over/Under mark against the full-game total in that same span, with Philly and its opponents putting up an incredible 6.8 goals per contest in this stretch. The Flyers are home for their next three outings before heading into March.
Seeing the Capitals on this list isn’t all that surprising if you’ve been following their high-scoring finishes all NHL season. Washington is the fourth-ranked offense and has gone 37-22-1 Over/Under versus full-game totals heading into the weekend.
The first-period results have been similar in recent outings, with Washington owning an 8-2 O/U mark against the first-period number in its last 10 games. The Capitals have actually led after one period just one time in that stretch, getting outscored by a combined total of 15 to 8 for an average of 2.3 first-period goals per game. It’s no surprise the Caps are just 2-8 overall in those 10 games.
There’s been fun in the sun for first-period Over bettors in Florida, where the Panthers have gone Over the total in the opening 20 minutes in eight of their last 10 showings. Much like the Capitals, Florida has led in after 20 minutes in just one of these contests but has been tied at the break in six of those 10 games.
Panthers games have produced an average of 2.2 goals in the first period over that 10-game period, but funny enough Florida has finished 5-5 Over/Under against the full-game total in those same contests – so keying in on the first-period flurry is important. Florida is on the road at Vegas and Arizona next before coming home for five straight games.
