Four NFL Week 1 games worth an early offseason wager

Now that the 2018 NFL schedule is on the board, football bettors are chomping at the bit to get action down on all the markets that follow. Some books have even posted their NFL Week 1 betting odds, offering sides and totals on the season openers.
If you’re counting down the days until football season, check out our sportsbook reviews then kill some time with these intriguing NFL Week 1 wagers.
Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles (-4.5, 47)
The Eagles begin their Super Bowl defense on Thursday Night Football against the former NFC Champion Falcons. Philadelphia is expecting to have third-year quarterback Carson Wentz back under center after he missed the team’s Big Game run after suffering a knee injury late in the season. Super Bowl winners have been a good bet in their first game of the following season since 2000, posting an 11-6-1 ATS streak in that span – 65 percent ATS winners. The total for this game is a tough one to crack, considering how far the Falcons offense fell last season. Football bettors may want to wait to watch Atlanta’s first-team production in the preseason before pulling the trigger on the Thursday night total.
San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings (-5, 47)
The Vikings made perhaps the biggest splash this offseason by shelling out the big bucks for free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins. There will be some growing pains for the Minnesota offense, as receivers get used to Cousins and visa versa this fall. However, the Vikes will once again lean on their hard-nosed defense to shut the door and brought in run-stopper Sheldon Richardson to sure up the defensive line. The Niners are hoping their finish to 2017 carries over to 2018, after going 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS with QB Jimmy Garoppolo under center. San Francisco spent a second-round pick on receiver Dante Pettis, and hope he will be Jimmy G’s go-to-guy for years to come. The 49ers were among the best road bets in the NFL last season, going 6-2 ATS as visitors and get five points in Week 1.
Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Giants (+4, 44)
Can the Jaguars lick their wounds from a tough postseason loss to the Patriots and continue to march forward in the AFC? Football fans will get a window into that answer when Jacksonville opens against the Giants in Week 1. The Jaguars should have plenty of inside information on their Week 1 foe, with former N.Y. head coach Tom Coughlin running front office operations for the Jags. The G-Men will debut their shiny new toy in the form of running back Saquon Barkley, who should give New York a dynamic weapon on ground, through the air, and on special teams. That vaunted Jaguars defense will also take its best shot at Giants veteran QB Eli Manning and the Jalen Ramsey vs. Odell Beckham Jr. matchup will be must-watch football.
Dallas Cowboys at Carolina Panthers (-2.5, 44)
This is a battle of two teams at a crossroads in the NFC. The Cowboys come out of a disjointed 2017 campaign in which they lost star running back Ezekiel Elliott to a long-delayed suspension at the end of the year – costing them a postseason spot. Carolina cracked the playoffs but checked out early, losing to divisional rival New Orleans in the Wild Card Round. Football bettors should expect a lot of ground and pound from both sides. Dallas rushed the ball on 47.76 percent of its offensive snaps in 2017 – third most in the NFL – and Carolina was right behind it at 47.04 percent. With that in mind, total bettors may want to lean to the Under, with a rush-heavy playbook keeping the clock ticking and the scoring low.
