A lot of big names have returned to full strength this season which leaves the odds to win the Comeback Player of the Year award wide open.
Three names in particular that sit ahead of all others are New York Giants running back, Saquon Barkley, Carolina Panthers running back, Christian McCaffrey, and New Orleans Saints quarterback, Jameis Winston. All of which are coming back from significant injuries last season that limited them each to playing just two games
Of the three players at the top, Saquon Barkley ( 500) has the shortest odds, and rightfully so as he has many factors that come into play. First off, his Week 1 performance showed that he did not skip a beat in his recovery having posted 164 rushing yards on 9.1 yards per carry and one touchdown.
Also, through two weeks he is second in the league in rushing yards (236) and is averaging 6.1 ypc thus far.
The Giants also haven’t been shy in giving him opportunities as he’s racked up 39 rushing attempts through two weeks.
Arguably the most important feature of them all though is that he has helped lead the Giants to their first 2-0 start since the 2016 season.
As for Christian McCaffrey ( 600), he has all the talent to win Comeback Player of the Year, but has gotten off to an extremely slow start in the Panthers first two games. He recorded 135 rushing yards and 50 receiving yards through two games, but has the game script heavily in his favor as the only back on the team with 5 carries on the season.
The main thing holding him back right now has been the performance of the team as they are 0-2 right now and have the eight toughest schedules remaining this season.
Following the two elite running backs, Jameis Winston ( 600) should not be overlooked as he has the biggest impact on how the Saints season plays out being the starting QB. While
Winston hasn’t gotten off to the hottest start of the season with three touchdowns and three interceptions of the top three contenders, he is being set up the best. The Saints have one of the top receiving cores in the league in Michael Thomas, Jarvis Landry, and rookie Chris Olave who could turn his season around.
The Saints are 1-1 through two weeks so there is still plenty of opportunity for Winston to turn things around.
